Description:

Under the direct supervision of the Executive Director, the Certified Head Teacher is the lead Center Administrator in the absence of the Executive Director.  The Certified Head Teacher Administrator will provide the center and staff with appropriate support in center operations.  The Certified Head Teacher will be responsible for the oversight of children with developmental milestone concerns and coordination of services.  Supports Executive Director in all aspects of the center including Administrative functions.

Responsibilities:

Ø Schedule of hours -10:00 - 6:00 (Monday – Thursday) Fridays 7:30 – 3:30

Ø Summer Schedule will vary based on program needs

Ø Adheres to all policies and procedures of DOH, CACFP, CUNY, Accreditation and the Children’s Center of John Jay College.

Ø Is the center’s on site supervisor (according to chain of command for DOH licensing) for staff/center in the event of the Executive Director’s absence

Ø Responsible to assist with staff coverage schedule 

Ø May be called upon to cover a classroom in the absence of a Head Teacher, or cover lunch breaks.

Ø Communicates and follow-up with the Executive Director on any issues or needs of the classroom and/or center

Ø Works closely with Executive Director and staff on center initiatives and special events

Ø Participates in professional development opportunities

Ø Knowledge of developmentally appropriate curriculum pedagogy and instruction

Ø Planning appropriate lessons based upon the individual needs of each child.

Ø Is well versed in all aspects of the Children’s center and its operation and function.

Ø Supporting Executive Director, classroom staff and parents in the special education process by:

A. Assisting and guiding classroom staff in recording observations and process for children with suspect developmental milestone delays. 

B. Working with Executive Director and Head Teachers in facilitating initial meetings with parents regarding developmental concerns and formulates plan for next steps.

C. Working with families through process and recommended referrals for services to Early Intervention/CPSE.

D. Serves as a liaison between children receiving special education services and outside providers.

E. Supporting families who are working with agencies for children with developmental milestone concerns.

F. Ensuring the coordination of service provider records are in place in order for a child to have on- site services.

G.  Follow up with families and classroom staff on progress of children receiving services

H. Reviewing IEP, IFSP goals to ensure that they are being implemented in the classroom. 

I. Responsible for developing and maintaining center tracking systems for children with developmental milestone concerns.

J.  Responsible for facilitating workshops for parents and staff when requested

K. Ensures all services are performed in accordance with state laws and regulations. 

Qualifications:

As per Section 47.13, Staff Qualifications Department of Health Article 47, the Certified Head Teacher shall possess a minimum of the following credentials:

Ø Must HAVE New York State Certification K-5 in Special Education

Ø Minimum of Bachelor Degree in Early Childhood

Ø Master’s Degree in Special Education is preferred

Ø Minimum of two years working with special education population

Ø Minimum of one year of supervisory experience

Ø Minimum of Two years of early childhood classroom teaching experience

Ø Demonstrates leadership experience

Ø Commitment to diversity and inclusion

Ø Must adhere to the strictest confidentiality of the children, clients and staff information

Ø Excellent oral and written communication skills

Ø Excellent organizational skills

Ø Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to interact with coworkers, families, children, outside agencies and the college community

Ø Provides a role model for client parents

Training/ Skills and Experience:

Ø Knowledge of day care regulations

Ø Early Intervention Referral Procedure

Ø Committee on Preschool Special Education Process, Policies and Procedures

Ø Knowledge of Infant & Toddler Development a plus
