A progressive and established cooperative in Astoria, Queens is seeking a creative and self-motivated teacher with a progressive approach to early childhood education to teach a small group of 3 year olds. Teacher will focus on social and emotional development through positive, child-led play with peers, project-based learning, and outdoor play and exploration. Classes will have both indoor and outdoor time each day. Teacher who is artistic, creative and innovative is highly desirable for this position. Classes will have no more than 6 children (3 years old) and there will be two teachers in the class at all times. Program time will be three mornings per week for 3.5-4hrs each day. 

Responsibilities:

  •  Provides responsive care to all children by adapting daily care giving routines and plans to the interests and needs of the individual child and the group 
  • Develops weekly plans and manages the learning experiences for children to assure the needs of the group and students are met 
  • Outlines projected routine of the day and communicates to co-teacher/assistant 
  • Assists students towards self-directed learning
  • Assesses the needs of the class and requests appropriate materials as needed
  • Attends monthly teacher curriculum meetings to plan and assess progress with curriculum committee
  • Maintains a neat and well organized environment
  • Works to develop close and effective relationships with parents, including opportunities to discuss and understand the child’s individual progress
  • Works cooperatively with parents 
  • Keeps a weekly log of each child's progress 

Qualifications:

  • Possesses progressive teaching practices that emphasize hands-on discovery
  • Competent in developing activities that allows the child to use all their senses 
  • Capable of setting up creative projects that encourage collaborative and positive group play that are creative and open-ended 
  • Capable of developing project-based learning using authentic tools and materials
  • Working knowledge of positive discipline and emotionally responsive strategies
  • Capable of setting up activities for outdoor discovery and play
  • Understanding of important social, emotional and cognitive stages and milestones of 3 year olds
  • Familiarity with developmentally appropriate practices as it relates to curriculum development and academic expectations for 3 year olds
  • Knowledge of Montessori, Reggio Emilia or other child-led pedagogies highly desirable
