Description:
The Assistant will share planning responsibilities with the Lead teacher(s)/Director for a mixed-age family-based program in Central Harlem, NY. Responsibilities will include, but not limited to, working with children in whole and small groups and individually in a developmentally appropriate way; building relationships with both children and families; planning in collaboration with Lead Teacher(s)/Director for appropriate activities that meet children’s needs in all developmental domains; and observing and assessing in an ongoing manner and in a way that informs instruction.
Accountability: Reports to the Director
Responsibilities:

- Exhibits personal behaviors and actions that reflect the work culture and program philosophy
- Considers families or parents as central; the most important decision-makers in a child’s life while honoring their decision-making style
- Works in partnership with parents to identify goals for their child
- Arranges a learning environment that is well organized, aesthetically pleasing, promotes reflection and extends learning
- Fosters a sense of community by encouraging interaction, empathy, connectedness, responsibility and independence
- Works to effectively and calmly address challenging behavior
- Incorporates into practice the knowledge of the different learning styles of adults and children
- Develops the disposition to effectively support young children and families
- Exhibits personal commitment to on-going growth and learning
- Displays professionalism in practice
Qualifications:
- Associates degree in early childhood education or CDA credential, bachelor’s degree with coursework in early childhood education preferred or minimally enrolled in the aforementioned with proceeding experience, and/or
- Minimally two (2) years’ experience working with children from birth through age 5 using developmentally appropriate practices in part-day or full-day program
- Employment is contingent upon successful completion of Dept. of Health & Mental Hygiene approval process

Additional Information:
The position is part-time with the availability of 24-35 hours per week. Paid holidays are offered at the completion of 3-months of employment and 10-days of paid vacation time annually is offered after the completion of 6-months of employment.
