Description:

The Director of Special Education will launch and lead a new special education program at Yeshiva University. The Director is responsible for leading recruitment efforts, managing marketing campaigns, hiring faculty, managing adjunct faculty, creating course schedules, dealing with student issues, and in general overseeing the growth and health of this new program. We are looking for an energetic Director of Special Education who has both capacity and vision as we launch a new program. We will be offering two masters degrees—one in early children and one in childhood. The Director of Programs in Special Education requires a full-time position serving on a 12-month contract.

Responsibilities:

  • Set and maintain course schedules based on need
  • Review the courses required for completion of the program
  • Review and adapt the existing course policies of YU to support Special education students
  • Advise students about the courses and pre-requisites required for each course
  • Teach, coordinate and schedule courses
  • Plan new initiatives such as workshops, and special events
  • Recruit and supervise adjunct faculty, professors and instructors who will teach the necessary courses
  • Recruit and supervise student teaching supervisors and mentors
  • Stay current with the legal requirements governing Special Education
  • Lead student recruitment, student admissions, and marketing efforts
  • Employ good problem solving skills relative to daily problems and snags
  • Evaluate existing programs for placement of student teachers and field experiences 
  • Develop liaison relationships with undergraduate schools for recruitment and 3+2 options
  • Coordinate field placements, develop partnerships with schools and facilities for children with special needs
  • Develop grants, and assure that the placements for student teaching are appropriate and have the best practices in place
  • Oversee teaching certification requirements including the implementation of the ED TPA standards and procedures
  • Oversee the accreditation requirements and is able to submit the report

Qualifications:

  • Must have an Ed.D or a Ph.D and Special Education Certification
  • Experience should include teaching, in both Higher education and on early childhood / elementary school levels. Director should have extensive knowledge in these areas.

  • Ability to manage details and understand the “big picture” of program launch
  • Capacity to manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast paced, high pressure office
  • Capacity to triage demands in order of priority
  • Capacity to generate professional and courteous correspondence in a timely fashion
  • Capacity to learn new skills as required to complete the job
  • Knowledge of Excel, Word
  • Knowledge of social media and what information should be put on a micro web site
  • Capacity to remain calm under pressure and complete tasks quickly
  • Capacity to navigate complex university systems to positive effect
  • Capacity to be courteous and an efficient problem solver
  • Ability to manage a budget
