Description:

The Head Start Teacher reports directly to the Center Manager, and plans and implements individually appropriate pre-school classroom curriculum and classroom practice. In helping to make the Head Start Program an exemplary agency, the Teacher puts into practice theories and sound principles of early childhood education and recognizes the parent as a full partner in the child’s education. The Teacher embraces the inclusion of both typically developing preschool children as well as those having special developmental needs. The Teacher assures that the curriculum and classroom activities are consistent with Head Start Performance Standards and Federal, State and local requirements.

Responsibilities:

The Teacher is responsible for: (1) the coordination and delivery of the curriculum;(2) observation, assessment and documentation of each child’s health, skills, behavior, and growth and development; 3) creating a classroom atmosphere that encourages the participation of parents; and, (4) implementing activities to help the child’s transition to public school.

 Implements the Head Start curriculum to provide appropriate and comprehensive activities to ensure the social, emotional, cognitive and physical development of the child. Conducts developmental screenings for each new child to determine their level of development as concerns language, social, cognitive, perceptual, and emotional skills. Coordinates on-going developmental assessments and monitors progress in the acquisition of skills and identifies the need for more specialized assessment for each child.

Develops and implements daily lesson plans for the provision of the curriculum as developmentally appropriate to the needs of each child. Coordinates and supervises all classroom activities.

Qualifications:

Minimum:  An Associate’s Degree in Early Child Development, three (3) years teaching children (preferably preschool children in a pre-school setting)

Preferred:  A Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education, with one (1) year experience teaching children (preferably preschool children in a pre-school setting).  NY State Certificate preferred.  Or, a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education with two (2) years’ experience teaching children (preferably preschool children in a pre-school setting). 

Must demonstrate: (a) understanding of early childhood education principles and practices as well as an understanding of early childhood development; (b) understanding of Head Start Performance Standards and other requirements affecting the provision of early childhood education including services to children with disabilities (c) ability to assess and respond to the individual needs of children; (d) ability to implement the approved Head Start curriculum; (e) Ability to function within the framework of a team approach; (f) ability to prepare and present clear verbal and written reports; and, (g) a commitment to serve families with respect and to establish and maintain positive relationships with persons of diverse backgrounds.
