The Education Trust–New York seeks a full-time Deputy Director who will serve as a key leader for the organization. The Deputy Director will work closely with the Executive Director to develop the organization’s strategic goals, policy positions, and key initiatives, including strategies for state-level advocacy. The Deputy Director will also support team management, including directly managing our research and policy analyst team.

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Deputy Director will help lead Ed Trust–NY’s efforts to close equity gaps in early childhood, K-12, and higher education.  

The ideal candidate for this role has extensive knowledge of the education policy landscape in New York State, including strong professional relationships with policymakers, advocates, philanthropy, researchers and thought leaders in the education policy field. 

The Deputy Director will have deep understanding of the key equity issues that impact students of color and students from low-income households in New York, as well as potential policy solutions at the state and local levels. They will also bring strong strategic leadership in statewide advocacy work, including demonstrated success working with grasstop and grassroot leaders and organizations to advance policy priorities. 

The Deputy Director will be a seasoned organizational strategist, with experience identifying, managing, and developing young talent, as well as leading growing teams.   

They will lead with a passion for educational equity and justice. The position will be based in New York State, with regular travel to New York City, Albany and occasional travel to other parts of the state (post-pandemic). 

The Deputy Director’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Work closely with the Executive Director to develop and implement the organization’s strategic goals, work plan, policy positions, and key initiatives. 
  • Lead our organization’s – and our coalitions’ – advocacy strategy at the state and local levels.  
  • Directly manage the policy analysis/research and advocacy teams at Ed Trust–NY focused on early childhood, K12, and higher education to advance our policy positions and influence legislation in New York State. 
  • Support our work to develop and sustain constructive relationships with key partners across New York State, including statewide and local civil rights, education, faith, business, and advocacy groups; legislators; practitioners; and the public.  

Qualifications:

We are looking for a combination of the following qualifications and experience: 

  • Passion for increasing statewide access to educational justice for all children, especially focused on children from low-income backgrounds and children of color who have been impacted by systemic racism and other social barriers to access, and an unwavering belief that these children could be much more successful if institutions better served them and their families. 
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion internally and externally, including confronting the impact of systemic racism in policy and advocacy work. 
  • Experience building or managing a team with members of varying degrees of professional and political experience. 
  • Deep familiarity with the New York State, New York City, and other local policy contexts that affect educational equity. 
  • Experience working closely with advocates and partners, with a record of success achieving policy change in partnerships and coalitions. 
  • Ability to effectively manage and develop a team made up of associate directors, senior and junior analysts, and consultants. 
  • Ability to act on behalf of the Executive Director in their absence.  
  • Comfortable with the conflict that may arise when pursuing groundbreaking data that may expose systemic educational inequities.  
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to proactively communicate critical messages to stakeholders and a diverse range of audiences. 
  • Ability to work on and manage multiple projects and prioritize competing commitments with quick turnarounds.  
  • Ability to negotiate nuances in policy and advocacy approaches. 
  • Superb project management, people management, and time-management skills. 
  • Master’s, Ed.D., Ed.L.D. or PhD with 10+ years of relevant professional experience, or Bachelor’s with 7-10 years of relevant professional experience, or 10+ years of relevant professional experience (preferred, but will consider all candidates). 
  • Strong sense of honor and integrity.  
  • A supportive working style that brings out the best in colleagues.

About Goals

Your goals describe specific areas that you are working on (or plan to work on) to improve or maintain the quality of your program. Goals connect your quality improvement work to the QUALITY standards and your rating and allow you to schedule and prioritize chunks of work in your progranm. Goals group together and organize related action items (tasks) and provide a narrative framework to keep you, your program, your QIM and Central Office on the same page.

Goal Scope and Scale

You have a lot of flexibility in developing QI Goals, but some rules of thumb help keep Goals useful, readable, and manageable:

  • Time: A Goal should be achievable roughly within a rating cycle, If you are struggling to put even an estimated end date on a Goal, it may be too broad. Ideally, several Goals will fit (with some overlap) within a rating cycle.
  • Standards: A Goal should roughly fit within a standard subcategory. This is flexible, of course, but if your Goal is spanning multiple standard categories, it may be too broad.
  • A Goal may be too small if it can be accomplished in one or two small steps.
  • A Goal may be too broad if you can't define concisely how you will know when it is complete.
Goal Label

The goal label is simply a brief title that allows you to distinguish this goal from others in a list or report. The more robust description of the Goal comes in the Goal statement below.

Think of it like naming a file on your computer so that later you can recognize it. This label will appear on your goal as a "title" along with your Goal statement, as well as being the identifier in drop-down or selection lists for viewing/using Goals.

What existing strengths and resources will help this goal be successful?

Goal Barriers

What factors, events or concerns might prevent you from accomplishing this goal? If you've attempted to make these changes in the past, what barriers arose and prevented you from following through? What resources or information could help you overcome these barriers and accomplish this goal?
