Job Description 

Job Title: 1:1 Aide Special Education
Reports To: Special Education Teacher – Director of Special Education
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Summary: Responsible for Assisting the Special Education Teacher in planning, preparing and implementing daily program of age appropriate integrated universal pre-K fun and educational activities as they relate to children enrolled in the program and the 1:1 child by performing the following duties.

Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Assist the classroom in bus or classroom arrival and departure, as well as in daily classroom program.*

2. Set up daily classroom and/or materials for 1:1 child as specified by the Special

Education/General Education Teachers.*

3. Assist in execution of daily lesson plans as provided by the General Education and Special

Education Teachers, modeling High Scope curriculum and implementing the teaching pyramid to fidelity.*

4. Actively participate in implementing the daily class plan by assisting with behavior management, co-teaching at enters/circle and contributing observations on student progress specific to 1:1 child and generally as needed. Maintain knowledge of SMILE children’s IEP goals and objectives.*

5. Maintain daily detailed anecdotal records specific to 1:1 child and how it relates to goals.

6. Support 1:1 child with specific goals and encourage growth and independence.

7. In the absence of the Special Education Teacher or the General Education Teacher assist in assuming teaching duties as needed by implementing lesson plans and following daily routine; while supporting 1:1 child.*

8. Assist the teacher/speech therapist or other support staff in laminating or material preparation for 1:1 child.

9. Advocate for services or changes in services as needed throughout the school year and at CSE/CPSE meetings under the supervision of the special education teacher.

10. Communicate with therapists, teachers, parents and others as needed on a daily basis to relay information regarding the 1:1 child.

11. Attend and participate in team meetings, i.e. SMILE, integrated and planning meetings as well as workshops offered at RCN and by other institutes.*

12. Support and enforce classroom and center policies.*

13. Assist with ensuring safety of Children through close supervision of activities; Foster adherence of safety rules and policies when children are going to and from school or field trips.*

14. Assist Special Education Teacher and General Education Age Teacher with maintaining all required attendance, SMILE, Child and Adult Care Food Program, New York State
Office of Children and Family Services and other RCN required paperwork to fidelity.*

15. Contribute to a clean, attractive, stimulating, safe, and organized classroom as well as assists in maintaining the cleanliness of floors, bathrooms, toys, and carpets according to New York State Office of Children and Family Services regulations, Rochester Childfirst
Network policies and procedures, and teaching pyramid model practices.*

16. Maintains open communication with the teaching team about the daily events in the classroom.

17. Request special snacks as needed, working with kitchen staff. Assist with set-up of snack in classroom.

18. Demonstrate willingness to expand knowledge of teaching skills, learning styles, and other information that will enhance level of support to the teacher and care to children enrolled in program.*

19. Adhere to and have knowledge of OCFS regulations; ratio, incident reports, supervision of children; staffing to ratio is required, and flexibility of assigned hours is expected.*

20. Follow the end of day closing procedures.

21. Maintain confidentiality at all times regarding child(ren) and family communications; refer to teacher for communication instructions.*

22. Adhere to Rochester Childfirst Network professional standards/code of conduct as outlined in employee handbook.*

23. Uses non-punitive methods of discipline and offers guidance in a positive manner.

24. Cooperates in the maintenance of wholesome interpersonal relationships, free of gossip about one another or about center families. Respects confidentiality of all written, oral and observed information. If there are questions about the actions of a particular staff member or supervisor, talk directly with that person privately; then discuss the matter with the
Program Director or Human Resources if needed.

25. Able to adapt to the immediate situation and change plans as needed.

26. Assist in implementing the use of PATHS curriculum for social and emotional development weekly.

27. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Qualifications:

Language Ability: 
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Math Ability: 
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability: 
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out and solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills: 
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of word processing software, internet software, and email software.

Education/Experience: 
High School Diploma/GED and one year of early childhood experience preferably in an integrated setting or Special Education experience.

Certificates and Licenses: 

  • CPR certification
  • First Aid certification
